Fear The Future: The bloody beginning

23/09/06  ||  Lord K Philipson

You know you are most possibly in for trouble musicwise when you get an album where the members all have troll-like names and a moniker such as “Fear The Future”. Obviously all the good names (The Project Hate, God Among Insects, Blümchen) are already taken, but hey… “Fear The Future”? The ambition to sport a great name isn’t sky-rocketing for this band it seems.

This recording just got out but was obviously recorded already back in the summer of 2004 with Tomas Skogsberg at Sunlight Studios. Why didn’t it see the light until 2006? Based on facts from their press sheet it was Skogsberg’s fault, who obviously took a shitload of time to mix the damn thing. But 2 years? Ok… The mix better be good then. Fucken great even. And the sound is all fine, so no worries about that. Not that much punch in it, but it’s all around fine. Sunlight Studios was never known for excellent punch anyways.

What at first appeared (judging from the names and the red haired chick) as a goth band with female vocals didn’t turn out to be that, at all. Fear The Future leans towards the blacker side of metal, with obvious inspiration from bands such as Dimmu Borgir. And much to my surprise (the cover of a book can be deceiving after all) I take some liking in what these guys (and gal) do. Not that you can see if from the tracklisting, but the songs are divided into 4 chapters (“This world’s bane to be”, “The escalation of self”, “The bitter fall” and “This flare will fade”) with the rest of the titles being parts of those chapters. I can’t say I’m all that fucken interested in reading any eventual story when it comes to FTF but I’m sure it’s some magnificent poetry-shit on par with Dan Brown or something. Fuck if I cared.

I mentioned Dimmu Borgir as a reference. That should give you a small hint of what to expect, but FTF isn’t a clone of said band. They have their own touch to what they do, which is quite refreshing. While at times being chaotic, they also maintain a dark vibe with nice orchestrations backing up some passages. Nothing groundbreaking or innovative, but it passes for a good listen if this kind of music is what makes your body move’n’groove.

Fear The Future is a fine band and, despite the moniker, they deserve that you guys give them a shot.

7/10.
